Chapter Fifty-Eight
HAMPTON
Hampton pulled up to Shayna Steeleâs office. He looked in his rearview mirror, adjusting a stray hair and got out of the car. As he walked into her lobby, the cheerful red headed secretary jolted up. âGood afternoon, Mr. Hampton.â
Why was he so terrible with names? He glanced around quickly, finally laying his eyes on a black and white name plate at the corner of her desk.
âGood afternoon, Kortnee. I hope youâre doing well.â
âI am. Thank you, sir.â She smiled at him genuinely.
âThey nearly finished?â he asked, pointing toward the door.
She glanced at the clock. âShould be any minute now.â
Hampton nodded and sat down on the large gray chair in the corner of the room. Shayna Steeleâs office was a teen girlâs dream. In the center of the lobby, pink and gray couches surrounded a fuzzy white throw rug. Hampton supposed it could be comforting to some, but it just made his skin crawl.
The office door swung open and Shayna popped her head out, meeting Hamptonâs eye. Her sly smile told him she had a secret to share. Standing up to face her, he smiled back.
âHampton. Right on time. We nearly ran over today.â
âYes, well, Iâm sure she wouldnât mind that.â He smirked, trying to spy Rachael through the space between Shayna and the door. Shayna, noticing his actions, pulled the door shut and walked toward him.
âWeâve been making quite a bit of progress. Sheâs very cooperative.â
âWhat does that mean? Do you think you have something? Something to help?â
Shayna grinned, shaking her head. âHampton, you give me too much credit. Iâm good, but Iâm not that good. Itâs only been a few sessions.â
âRight, of course.â He felt a tiny bit of hope deflate.
âOh, donât look so upset. I know how important it is to you that we help Rachael. I just wanted you to know how hard sheâs working.â
âThatâs great,â he said sarcastically. âLucky you. When I met her she was stubborn as hell. I warmed her up for you.â He smirked, recalling their first encounter. âSo, be glad.â
Shaynaâs eyes twinkled in delight. What did she know that he didnât?
